Ask an Expert Transition Webinar Meetups

eXtension Web Meetup to Begin Orienting Extension Professionals on Changes to Ask an Expert

On November 18, 2016, the eXtension Foundation Board of Directors accepted, with final revisions, the recommendations for redesigning the delivery of Ask an Expert that emerged from a summer’s study project led by a team of eXtension staff and participated in by interested Extension professionals nationwide. Next week, two web meetups will be held to begin the transition process for 2017 by introducing attendees to the changes and what they mean for you and your audience(s).

Please plan to join one or both of these two meetups. Learn how to make changes for profiles of experts working Ask an Expert and also to update profiles of Ask an Expert Groups. Share your tips and training resources to prepare you and your Ask an Expert group for managing a direct, incoming flow of questions without a national Question Wrangler group.

Tuesday, November 29, 2016, 2:00 pm EST

Learn more and add to your calendar or join directly on November 29 at 2:00 p.m. EST at https://extension.zoom.us/j/851420320

Two Major eXtension Zoom Meetings to Discuss Future Directions

Please plan to join eXtension leaders for two important web events this week. Both discussions will inform decisions on issues of interest that will affect Cooperative Extension professionals in the future.

Wednesday, October 12, 3:00 p.m. Eastern on the Future of Ask an Expert

Ask an Expert is the Q&A system which allows Cooperative Extension professionals (referred to as experts within the application) to engage with the public through the ask.extension.org website. Recently, eXtension completed a reassessment of Ask an Expert and is proposing changes to make it more functional for Cooperative Extension. Prior to attending this web meeting, please review this document–Recommendation for Ask an Expert Changes–which provides background and a summary of the proposed changes. This web meeting will focus on answering questions and getting feedback from meeting attendees. To learn more, register for the event and put it on your calendar, visit learn.extension.org/events/2853.

[This meeting will be recorded so anyone unable to attend may view it at a time of their choosing. Extension professionals may also pose questions and contribute feedback prior to and following the conversation. After reviewing the recommendation document and attending the meeting or viewing the recording, please submit your thoughts, questions and concerns using this form: Feedback on Ask an Expert Recommendation. Comments are due by October 19, 2016].

Thursday, October 13, 2:00 p.m. Eastern on Findings of the Horizon Report

eXtension has been working with the New Media Consortium and the ECOP Innovation Task Force to create a Horizon Report for the Cooperative Extension System to Prepare for the Future. The report looks at technologies, challenges, and opportunities on the horizon, from today to three to five years out. In this first web meeting in a series of four, Jerry Thomas, Director of eXtension’s I-Three Innovation Lab, will provide an overview of the report, the innovations Cooperative Extension should keep an eye on and how we can embrace them. Learn more at https://learn.extension.org/events/2824 or simply join this meeting with your questions and ideas for the conversation at https://extension.zoom.us/j/512771814

IMPORTANT WEB MEETING October 12: Discussion of Ask an Expert Change Recommendations

Opportunity for Extension Professionals to Review Proposed Changes to Ask an Expert

Ask an Expert logoRecently eXtension led a reassessment of Ask an Expert. While Ask an Expert is one of eXtension’s most valued assets with more than 321,284 questions answered by 6,474 experts since February 21, 2008, the steadily increasing volume of questions from 2008 to the present has posed challenges for the professionals and volunteers who serve as experts to answer the questions. To get your input, eXtension will be hosting a web meeting on Wednesday, October 12, at 3:00 p.m. Eastern to discuss the findings and recommendations for changes. Prior to attending the web meeting, we suggest that attendees review this document — Recommendation for Ask an Expert Changes. For more information, to register for this web meeting, and to add this event to your calendar, visit learn.extension.org/events/2853.

Webinar October 10: Potential Uses and Benefits of Augmented Reality for Extension Professionals

Augmented reality (AR) is an immersive technology that allows users to interact with the digital and physical world. Whereas virtual reality (VR) is a computer simulated environment that replicates the physical world, augmented reality involves creating layers of digital information on top of the physical world that is viewed through an Android or iOS device, making that world alive and interactive for the viewer.

Please join Michele Kroll, M.S. EdS from University of Missouri Extension, on Monday, October 10, 2016, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., ET, for a new webinar, “Augmented Reality: A New Tool for Extension.” Michele will jump right into introducing some of the tools and ways she has used AR in her Extension work.

To gain the best experience from this webinar, we recommend that you read the series of four blog posts on AR that Michele recently published on eXtension.org. This series of short posts presents an excellent introduction to AR technology and examples of its uses. In the Webinar, Michele will build on this background to focus on AR’s potential for Extension.
Michele has been an MU Extension faculty member for 25 years and works as an Education Technology/Online Educator and Community Development Specialist. She is currently a PhD student in Information Science and Learning Technologies at MU. Michele loves developing interactive online courses and using technology to collaborate and bring meaningful learning experiences to learners. She is currently a member of a research team developing an augmented reality and virtual reality project.

Webinar August 23: Advocacy on the Job for Extension Professionals

Advocacy on the Job:
A Case Study for Extension Professionals Amid Budget Cuts

It’s a challenge that Extension professionals experience more often than they wish: a state’s budget process threatens to dramatically reduce or eliminate a state’s Extension and other agriculture programs.

In 2015, Pennsylvania State University Extension faced elimination of its entire state appropriation. In response, the college and its stakeholders engaged in a comprehensive advocacy and communication strategy that was so compelling that in March, 2016, the entire budget was restored, plus an increase of 9.5%.

Please join eXtension on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, from 2:00-3:00 p.m., ET, for a new webinar, “Hope Is Not a Strategy: A Case Study on Penn State Extension’s Engagement to Restore State Funding.” This webinar will highlight three parts of this successful advocacy effort:

  • Building long-term relationships with stakeholders and making them effective advocates who lead the efforts to restore funding
  • Spreading the message about Extension through traditional and social media
  • Following messaging guidelines for Extension employees when they post on social media or give interviews in funding-challenged times

The case study will be presented by Mary Wirth, Director of College Relations and Communications for the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences. The office is a component of the dean’s office that manages the college’s relationships and strategic communications with external audiences – with a focus on alumni, industry and legislators as well as future students − and covers all three mission areas of the college including education, research and extension.
